Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

What a business can leave on a home answering machine.

I am wondering what information can I leave on a person's answering machine when I am trying to collect a debt that is over 90 days past due. Am I allowed to leave past due balance info?

Thanks

Both California and Federal Acts contain lists of acts and practices prohibited to debt collectors, as well as general prohibitions on unfair collection practices. See Civil Code Sections 1788.10 et seq. and 15 USC Sections 1692c et seq.

Generally, as long as it is not at odd hours and is done in a non-threatening or outrageous way, informing a debtor of an amount of a debt is fine.
