Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

A friends favor

Im a bartender, and a couple years ago (2002) a customer of mine who is a accountant said he would do my taxes for me and my girlfriend for free. i SAID OK. He now doesnt work for that company anymore. The company is sending us letteres saying we owe them 150.00 a piece and threating to send this to collection and TRW. I called them and explained i worked this out with there employee outside of the job.they want me to send them info on how much i paid him , a stament, and a returned check. my question, Do i have to give them any info? I dont want to get my customer in any trouble. this was done at my place of buisiness. thanks
