Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I'm a single mother, that was burdened with major medical bills when my son was born. I've tried making arangements with the hospital collection company. They will not answer my questions and have served me with a court summons for judgement. I cannot afford to pay the full amount, but do not want my wages garnished. Is there a way to prevent wages from being garnished?

First, you should make sure to file an answer to the complaint within the 30 days of its service upon you. Then, you will be in a better position to attempt to settle the debt with the hospital's attorney.

As Robert says you must make sure you file an answer within 30 days of being served. If you dont they will get a judgment against you, and will garnish your wages. After you file your answer if the hospital is not being reasonable perhaps you should consider filing for bankruptcy as that may wipe out the debt. Check with your local county bar association and see if they have any free or low cost legal help clinics too.

Hope this helps and good luck.
