Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Substituted Service for a Debtor's Exam

I scheduled an SC-134 (small claims debtor's exam) and the debtor/defendant will not show himself to be served because he knows it's coming and he's avoiding service. I substituted service on his wife at his house; can the judge make a ruling that this service is OK given that personal service is required under statute?

I have never found authority that allows for anything other than personal service.
