i have a summons and sent out a debt validation letter, can i still ask the court for more time to prepare an answer

A debt validation does not stop court proceedings, You can request more time to prepare an answer from the court with a proper motion or you can request more time from the opposing attorney, but you are better off focusing your efforts on preparing the answer or making a settlement offer.
