Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Dog Ownership after relationship split.

my ex boyfriend and i purchased a dog together years ago and we have split. he moved out and took the dog with him. he has let me take him home in the past, but now refuses to allow me to see him. and i just heard that he is moving out of the area soon WITH OUR DOG. my heart is breaking. what would the law do to me if i just took him, its both of ours. (i can, i know where he keeps a spare key... or i can take him if he ever lets me have him for a weekend). can i be jailed? pay a fine? i dont know. im afraid its coming to the point where i would take him and move out of the area and just never contact him again.

please help... please tell me what i can do?

Re: Dog Ownership after relationship split.

Grand or Petty Theft dog is a crime (Penal Code sections 487 subds. (e) and (f)). Why spend years looking over your shoulder because you have committed a crime? Post a question in the civil section to see if anyone wants to help you sue for dog custody.
