If a couple had been married over 10 yrs is the ex husband liable to pay spousal support for the rest of his ex wifes life?

The rule of thumb is half the length of the marriage, but there are a lot of factors that go into the final decision.

Not necessarily. More accurately stated, both parties are required to pay spousal support depending on which one makes more income. For example, as is often the case, your ex husband could be required to pay you spousal support until he reaches retirement age, if you do not remarry. If, when he reaches retirement age, you, with the income you receive from his retirement pay, earn more money than he does, then it will be your turn to pay spoousal support to him.
