Divorce is dissolution of marriage by a court verdict, while legal sepration is not dissolution of marriage, in sepration the marriage still subsist.

The difference between dissolution (divorce) and legal separation proceedings in California is that in a "legal separation" the parties remain married. It is a method of resolving property, support, child custody and other marital disputes which is typically used by religious believers whose religion (e.g. Roman Catholic) prohibits divorce.
