Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Dog issue

Hello,

My dog got out of the backyard and attacked the neighbors smaller dog. As of yesterday the dog seemed fine however the neighbor notified me that if his dog dies that he will sue me. Is there anything I can do? Do I have any kind of defense at this point?
