Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Recourse against parents of 16 year old

What recourse do I have against the parents of a 16yr old who physically attacked my 15yr old child? We are filing battery charges & the child has been transferred to a different high school, but can we sue in small claims court? If so, for what? The child has already stated doesn't care about trouble she is in for this as long as it doesn't "cost" her parents anything. I think, if that is the only way to get the msg to the parents, it should cost them. Please advise. Thank you

Under the California Civil Code, you may sue the parents for damages. If you sue in small claims court, you will be limited to a recovery of $5000.00.
