Legal Question in Employment Law in California

My current employer "heard" that I may be looking for another job. Although I have been contacted by another company regarding recruitment, I have not accepted any offer. My employer told me today that I needed to make a decision "right now" whether or not I would be staying in my current position or moving on. I didn't know how to reply. He wants me to resign just because I "might" accept another position? Im not sure what to do? I cant afford to just quit and I have no idea if this other possibility will even pan out. Can he force me to make a decision? (I live in California.)

Thank you!

Yes he can, except he can't make you resign. If you won't commit to stay he has to fire you or let you keep working for him, because that affects your right to unemployment.

He can demand pretty much what he wants.

In general, unless an employee is civil service, in a union, or has a written employment contract, they are an 'at will' employee that can be disciplined or terminated any time for any reason, with or without cause, explanation or notice. That includes firing you if he suspects you are looking for work.
