In California, contracts which prevent employees from working for a competitor are generally not enforceable, unless the employee intends to use the former employer's trade secrets, which I'm guessing does not apply in your case. But if you no longer work there, what incentive is your former employer offering you to sign such an unenforceable contract?

Without reading the contract, it would not be appropriate to provide you with advice on what to do. Go see an employment law attorney who can read the contract and properly advise you.
