Legal Question in Employment Law in California

Hello,

Is it legal to work as a volunteer in a for-profit corporation? I am currently an employee of this company and will lose my work permit in the near future. However, i would like to continue to volunteer in my position with no remuneration of any sort, till i get my work permit which will be after a year or so. Then i plan to resume my position once i get my work permit. Is this legal? If not, What if someone else is employed in my place after i quit, and then i volunteer at will only to help out?

In california, volunteering is very tricky. If the USCIS believes that you are working illegally, you might be in trouble. I will recommend having a consultation with a good immigration lawyer before you do anything.
