Legal Question in Employment Law in California

I was recently demoted at work. I have not been satisfied with this situation, and as such, I have been very reserved at work. I do not socialize with any body, if someone says hello I say hi back and that is it. If they ask how I am doing I respond that I am still alive. Today, my supervisor came to me and said that his supervisor, my supervisor prior to my demotion, wanted to speak to me. I went into the conference room and asked what I did wrong this time. As it turns out I was told I was not fulfilling my obligations of teamwork because I have been stand offish. I stated that this was incorrect that I was fully functional with the team I had been placed with and I was getting my work done. I was told that I had an attitude problem, to which I asked exactly what the problem was and was told again that I was being stand offish. I responded by saying that I come in and do my job for eight hours a day and leave, "what more do I need to do to keep you the hell off my back?" The supervisor responded asking what did you just say? and I repeated myself. The supervisor then told me he was asking that I take the rest of the day off. My question is not whether or not they have grounds to fire me since being in California places us into an at will employment state, but whether or not they have to pay me for the remainder of the day since I was ready and willing to work?

If you are salaried/exempt, then they must pay you on a daily rate. If you are hourly and/or non-exempt, they only need to pay you for the time you were at work.
