Landlord trying to deduct weather damage from security deposit

I recently moved out of my apt and after my landlord inspected it, he told me that there was water damage to the ceiling in my apt that was caused by heavy rains during the winter. In the year that I lived in the apt I never noticed water leaking into the apt or the water stain in the corner so I'm not sure when the damage occurred. The building is 75 years old so I just assumed it was already there. Needless to say the owner says that because I didn't notify him I am responsible for the damages. Is this true?

You are absolutely not responsible for damages to the apartment caused by forces other than you. You are required to notify the landlord of problems you are aware of, such as a leaky faucet that causes water damage, or an open floor or leaky toilet or sink. You are not responsible for this problem if you did not notice it. Good Luck.
