First, Last months rent and deposit

In the state of CA, can a landlord charge you first, last months rent and deposit to move in? I need help I think I've overpaid $1800. I need an answer by 03/07/08. Thanks!

Yes, but the landlord cannot charge you for a deposit more than double the monthly rent: except an additional 50% monthly for waterbeds; and/or an extra month's rent where the premises are furnished.
