Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Is having to show proof of auto insurance a legal requirement?

My friend recently told me that while he was re-newing his lease, the leasing agent told him he had to show proof of auto insurance and financially re-qualify for the same apartment he was living in. if he could not show proof of either, he would have had to leave. Is this legal?

They would have to follow the appropriate eviction procedures under the law. I'm not sure what proof of auto insurance has to do with his ability to pay rent, unless it's a mobile home.

Probably. Discrimination on the basis of auto insurance is legal.
