Legal Question in Legal Malpractice in California

Two police officers were conducting fare evasion checks on a train platform. The first one asks for my pass which I showed. The second officer starts to pass me by and asks me "how are you doing today sir"? I ignore him and he then says "Good?" Am I obligated to reply if an officer is asking me how my day is going? I don't believe there is such a thing as a nice cop or friendly cop so I questioned his motive behind asking me how my day was going.
