how many days does a property owner have to keep tenant's belonging in an apartment before they can be removed? The legal tenant was killed on August 24, 2015 and his things remain in the unit. The unit is unoccupied and the belongings remain. No rent is being paid.

Assuming there is no claim on the possessions or a police investigation ongoing, you should be able to move the possessions to a garage or storage unit temporarily so that you can get new tenants. Then you would need to follow the procedures for dealing with tenant property to make sure you don't get sued by someone. There is a helpful guide at the Department of Consumer Affairs Website that explains it very well.
