Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Hello!

Question about abandoned property:

I had a boyfriend live rent-free in my house for under one year.

He has since moved out, but left some personal items at my house. I told him verbally about the property. It has been over six months and he hasn’t picked up his things.

The only things I can find online regarding abandoned property are laws regarding landlord-tenant relationships where a lease was in place. I cannot find anything for circumstances where there is no formal written agreement.

I’d appreciate some advice on when I can dispose of this property.

I would treat him as a tenant. Provide written notice with inventory of materials. Take pictures. I would have a process server provide notice. Allow for 18 business days to respond to pick up property. State in writing what you are going to do with property after this time period. If challenged you can have evidence that you went above and beyond.
