How do I find out if someone left a will and can I read it?

According to California law, the will should be filed with the clerk of the court in the county where the person lived within 30 days of death. You can visit the courthouse and ask to see the court file which should contain the will.

Unfortunately, not everyone obeys the law, and in some cases it is necessary for you to ask the executor for a copy of the will; you may also want to hire an attorney to help protect your rights if you believe you have a substantial inheritance and you are not being treated fairly by the executor/administrator.
