Re: condo rules, the right to privacy

The owners are the shareholders of the strata corporation. In British Columbia, all owners have a right to inspect the books of the strata corporation, and the strata corporation should provide regular financial statements to all owners. Monthly statements are best. Part of the financial statements should be the accounts receivable, and part of accouts receivable shoule be a statement of what delinquent owners owe to the strata corporation. There is no such thing as a right to privacy such that a person who owes money can keep secret the information about how much he owes from the person(s) to whom he owes money. If an owner owes the strata corporation money, he or she owes it to his or her fellow owners and they certainly have a right to know about money the delinquent owner owes them.
