Legal Question in Personal Injury in Canada

What is my Lawyer up to?

I am sueing for personal damages. I hired a lawyer. The court date was cancelled, which was in another city. My lawyer went to this city after he notified me of the cancellation of the court date. His bill ( the amount he charges me) said that he went to this city and back ''for Arraignment'' My Question is: Was it necessary for him to go to this city in person? ( His parents live in this city) He seems to charge us for every little thing. Can you help me?

Re: What is my Lawyer up to?

THIS REPLY APPLIES ONLY TO BRITISH COLUMBIA. You have not given enough information for a complete reply; having said that I do not understand why you would be charged for "arraignment" as that is a term that has no place in a civil lawsuit for damages; that term refers to an appearance by an accused before a judge to answer for a crime. I strongly suggest that you have another lawyer look at the bill(s) you have received from the 1st lawyer, as in British Columbia there is a procedure called "assessment" (sometimes referred to as "taxation") where an official can determine if you have been charged a proper fee/disbursements. In B.C. many lawyers will give you an initial consultation at no fee, and will tell you whether or not you have grounds to complain. If you do you can then decide what you want to do further.
