what are the repercussions

if a client's attorney sends me a letter to not contact his client, what happens if I do contact the client? There is no court order in place. We are currently in litigation with this client

What will happen is that you will likely be slapped with a restraining order. Litigation is intended to be conducted through the attorneys; that's why people hire attorneys. Make your communication through your attorney; if you have no attorney, call your opponent's attorney.
