taking down some trees

I got an estimate to take down two trees on my rental property, I agreed to have them taken down, but my husband said no, so my husband called left a message for the tree man on his answering maching, the man took down the trees and clains he never recived my husband message, I never signed a contract nor sent a deposit. I stood next to my husband while he was on the phone leaving the message not to take the trees down?? Now the tree man wants to send a bill to a collection agency, what do I do??
