collection of a debt

I lent a friend a few thousand dollars, I drew up a promisary note which he signed. The note was not notorized, Is this a legal document and how can I collect my money

As long as your "friend" doesn't deny the loan and claim his signature was a forgery.

You need to sue him in small claims court, get a judgment and try an collect/lien against his wage/bank account/property, etc.
