Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

My fiance gave me the engagement ring as a birthday gift. We have called off the engagement. Do I need to give back the ring? He has left me with a lot of bills, and I need the money. Thank you.

This area of the law is not that clear in Connecticut. However, a no-fault approach has been decided in several cases in this state indicating that regardless of who is at fault for calling off the wedding, the donee of the ring must give it back because it is a conditional gift in contemplation of marriage. If he left you with lots of bills, you too may be able to recover money you spent in contemplation of marriage.

You should speak with a lawyer about the particular facts of your case for an opinion.
