Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Connecticut

I have a tennant that moved out of my apartment five weeks ago. They left boxes of their possessions in the basement. I have asked them several times each week to come get their things out of the storage room.

Each week they say they will pick them up on the weekend but they never do. They are using my basement as free storage. What action can I take legally.

You need not keep the possessions longer than thirty (30) days. Since they have contacted you, it appears they have sufficient notice regarding pick up of the belongings. You should inventory the possessions. I would send them one last notice giving them a certain number of days to pick them up, otherwise you are disposing of them.

In the future, you should put some language in the lease to protect yourself and to make this process a lot easier.
