Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in District of Columbia

I am the oldest of three children my father died over thirty years ago without a will in Washington DC. That left the family home in my mothers name and the name of my two sisters and myself. several years ago my sisters tried to take a loan on the home and I refused to sign the loan papers, later ( about two years) i noticed some work being done on the home, the locks were changed and I no longer had access they stated several times they would give me akey but never did. My mother died recently and I need to know what to do to get information on the ownership and access to the home. Both my sister are acting very srange pertaining this matter. My oldest sister's son has been living in the home as he did before my mother was placed in a Nursing Home (about nine years ago) I think my sisters may have lied or done something that removed my name from the home. What do I need to do to find the status of the property.

You mother should have informed the heirs that she had a will. If she didn't have a will and she didn't remarry or transfer title to another person, her children would be entitled to net assets in her estate.

You may want to move forward to become the personal representative of the estate. You would be entitled to collect her assets, pay her liabilities, and be compensated for your work. It is advised to hire an attorney to assist you in the administration.

If you need additional information about your rights to your parents' estates or your appointment as personal representative, please contact me. My information is available by clicking my name.
