constractor dispute

I hired a cabinet maker to build kitchen cabinets. Gave 50% deposit. During the process, I ordered more cabinetry, and was given an approximate verbal price. Told him to go ahead. He didn't want additional deposit at that time. At end of my construction project, he installed the cabinetry, but refused to fix one piece that was not done properly, would not come back to install hardware, and would not come back to install trim work as agreed originally. It's been 8 months and I just received 10 day notice from his attorney. Do I have to pay the much larger price we didn't agree too, and since he abandoned the site, do I have legal recourse? Thanks.

He can place a lien on your home for the work he did, which you will ultimately have to pay for because it was done. You should know better than to enter into a verbal agreement regarding this much money with someone who can lien your property. You will now have to negotiate a settlement because it sounds like you owe money here.
