Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Collection debt

I have a debt from 11 years ago. I had no idea it existed and no one untill now called to say it was due. I have no records of the debt but I believe it was settled years ago. The agency says that 11 years of past due plus late fees have been added and now the debt is around $800. Do I have to pay the debt or the fees if no one has contacted me in 11 years? The state was florida that the debt was in.

Re: Collection debt

You do not provide enough information to tell if the statute of limitations has passed, as it could be the limitations period of another state. Further, even if it has, the collector can not only still attempt collection, they can file a lawsuit and get a judgment if not properly defended. The easy solution - determine whether it is a valid debt and, if so, reach an agreement to honor your obligation (in an appropriate amount). If it it not your debt, don't pay.
