Can my brother and I be responsible for debt incurred by our 90 year old Mother because she put our names on her Sun Trust bank account in Florida ? She has a reverse mortgage that she has been accessing for 2-3 years. We have just discovered she owes 700.00 in NSF overdraft charges, not to mention all the checks that have been returned. We have not co-signed for any credit cards. What would you suggest for us to do?

If your mother merely added your name to the account without your signature or
agreeing to a joint account, you should not be liable for the bank fees. If you
agreed to be a joint account holder, you may be liable. Discuss it with the
bank to settle the matter before you pay any fees; review any bank records,
documents, agreements, and statements. The overdraft fees apply to the
bank account rather than credit cards or reverse mortgage, and appear to
be excessive.
