Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

I went back to my maiden name

Well, I took my husband's death certificate and my maiden name documents with me to Driver's License office 3 weeks ago. I got a new license with my maiden name on it. Then I went to Social Security Card Office to do the same thing. They said that., I have to bring a court order otherwise they can't do it? What is wrong with this picture? (If my license says --name removed-- why can't they change my name to my maiden name on my social security card?

I really appreciate your feedback.

God Bless!

Re: I went back to my maiden name

You have to file a petition for name change. Your name doesn't automatically revert to your maiden name on your husband's death. The federal government is far more strict about it than the state government.

Only the court can legally change your name.
