retreats

i work for a non profit co. and i am being forced to go to a retreat. I help my daughter care for an infant and i would also miss school if go. Can i refuse without being fired?

You seem to be in a difficult situation. There is nothing explicitly illegal about an employer requiring someone to attend a retreat as a condition of emploument, but if, for example, they treat you differently because of your sex/gender (which could include what is called "gender plus" discrimination and involves situations where a woman with a child is treatedly different than potentially a similarly situated male employee), that might violate state and/or federal anti-discrimination laws.
