Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

My wife and I left our previous rented home of 10 years ( always paid on time ) last year. The realty firm that looks after the house for the landlord did not refund us for the initial deposit. The issue I have is that soon after we received a letter from a collections agency requesting that we pay almost $2000 in damages. Which we strongly contest. At the time a lawyer friend wrote to them, the letters stopped. Recently we ran a credit check on ourselves and noticed the collection agency still has this amount against our name. What options do we have? It appears the letter from my friend ceased the collections agency from persuing us, trouble is though the amount is now on our credit file under collections.

What options do we have ? Thanks.

Contact your friend the attorney. Have that person contact the credit reporting company. It may be violating the FDCPA. You can also contact the credit reporting agencies to file a dispute on this item on your report.
