how to find out if there is an estate

We are a physicians office - the patient is deceased and left a balance - how do we find out if there is an estate to collect on that balance from? What steps do I need to do? Where do I start?

Re: how to find out if there is an estate

Call the Clerk Of Court for the circuit court in the county where the decedent resided to ask whether probate has been opened (or go online and get the information). If probate has been initiated, file a claim. If not, you may file a caveat with the clerk so you will be notified if probate is initiated. There is a charge for filing a caveat, but not for filing a claim.

Check at the probate court house where he lived to see if an estate has been set up.
