Legal Question in Business Law in Georgia

Workers Compensation insurance

I own a new relocation company. My insurance provider has informed me in order to obtain Workers Compensation insurance i need to have 3+ full time employees. At the moment it is only myself who could be considered a full time employee. Business has not yet reached a level where I can afford to have 3 full time people on board. My question is: the movers are exposed to potentially dangerous moving situations occasionally. Are they required to obtain their own insurance, or am I legally responsible for them, should something happen while on a job site.

Re: Workers Compensation insurance

f your workers are independent contractors, you are not required to obtain workers comp insurance for them. However, whether someone is truly an independent contractor vs. an employee can be tricky. Whether they get it for themselves really is up to them unless you require it in an independent contractor agreement, which you should so they don't look to your company for help if they get hurt. You should have a good, solid independent contractor agreement in place that makes it clear that they are independent contractors and that they should have their own insurance (among other things).
