child custody

i went to jail and my son was staying with his grandmother well i was in there for 3 months and now that i am out she said that she got permanent custody of him i got papers in jail saying i was to be in court but i couldnt and i never sighned anything well now she says i cant have my son back is that legal

I doubt they could have obtained anything legally binding without at least having the sheriff serve you with papers. Consult with a local attorney.
