First of all, let me stress that you want a lawyer who has solid adoption experience. We do them with some regularity, but probably 95% of lawyers have never done one or do them rarely. The expertise matters.

The length of time will vary greatly by county, and also by whether the bio-dad consents. Consent will simplify the case and reduce the costs a good bit.

The earliest a case can be finalized is 60 days after filing. Some counties take a good bit longer.

Depending on the facts, a bio-dad's rights may be terminated if he doesn't consent. That will usually lengthen the process and it adds to the costs.

In counties that do an investigation (some do, some don't), trying to file too soon after you marry may pose problems. We'd want to know more background to address that.

Because of the various investigations that are required, it may take months. You should contact a local attorney for more details.
