Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

Background check

I have been working for this company for almost 17 years. When I was hired, they performed a thorough background check on me. Now, they are telling a lot of employees that the paperwork is not on file and that we must consent to another background check. If I say no to another background check, can they terminate me? Or can there be other repercussions?

Re: Background check

Most employment in Georgia is "at will," meaning you can be fired for any or no reason, except things apparently not relevent here (race, age...). An exception would be if you had a contract (possibly including any employee handbook). We don't know your situation, but assume in many cases, refusing to consent would lead to negative repurcussions (and possibly an assumption you have something to hide).
