Legal Question in Family Law in Hong Kong

hong kong divorce

My husband filed for divorce in Hong Kong over five years ago when we lived there with our children. We are both

American citizens. I moved back to the U.S. 6 months later. My husband stayed, though he had lost the job he had moved there for. The child custody arrangements were finally settled 1 1/2 years ago. The financial settlement, including child support, is finally headed toward resolution. I have received no child support or spousal support in all that time. My husband has claimed to be unemployed/unemployable for over 5 years, though he once made a very good income. He just inherited what may be a substantial amount of money from a relative in New Jersey. I want to take whatever steps necessary to stop him from receiving this money until there is some kind of order in place. I don't think Hong Kong is very effective at enforcing child support. I also believe my husband will bury the money somewhere off-shore as soon as he can. I have not tried to move the case here because of a lack of funds and the reluctance of courts here to take over an open case. Any advice would be welcome.

Re: hong kong divorce

If you and the children have been in Washington State for at least six months you can ask to have the WA courts enforce the child support, custody and maintenance orders here. If they were valid there, WA will enforce them.

If there is money in NJ, I have a friend there who can help.

The person here in WA who can help you is Joyce Heritage. You can find any WA attorney at a v v o dot com or wsba dot com.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
