settlement on old credit card

i recently agreed to pay a settlement with an attorneys office for an old visa card. today the collector called me and left me a message on my voicemail to call her back and she left my ''reference #'' on my voicemail which my boyfriend also has access to and he was upset about a debt i had that he didnt know about. i have not yet paid the settlement although it is due on 2 or 3 days. is it illegal for them to leave a reference # on my voicemail? please help!
