My sons father purchased a car for me in 2008 can he legally take the car back from me? He has always made the payments but I am the primary driver.

Who is the title/lien holder?

The "legal" owner of the vehicle has the right to possession. (The persons name on paper, payment stubs, loan docs, etc.)

Unless you can show that the vehicle was given to you as a gift, if he is making the payments, buying the insurance, and possesses the title, the vehicle legally belongs to him. As Sal mentions, one has to have a possessory interest in the property.
