Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

In an employment complaint in federal court, involving an overseas company for wrongful termination, the defense has obtained a court order for me to produce my tax returns. The tax returns are to determine lost earnings and any award on winning the case.

I have yet to win the case. If I lose the case, my provided tax returns will be irrelevant. Why do I have to produce these documents before winning the case ?

You can seek a protective order based on your reason (i.e., these returns are only relevant to damages), but it is unlikely to be granted. Rule 26 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure provides for very broad discovery, and most judges will side with the defendant and require that you produce any document of even marginal value.
