Can they keep my deposit?

I made a deposit of $750.00. I signed no lease agreement or any contract. I was supposed to make rent payment on Dec. 1. I tried to unsuccessfully to contact rental company November 23, to tell them I was no longer able to rent the property from them. (I left message with them that I was no longer able to rent the property, and asked for my deposit back. He was only willing to give me back $600.00. Can he do that?

Based on the limited facts you present, it is likely that you would be responsible for the December rent. I would say the loss of the $150 might be a cost effective way to extricate yourself from this situation.
