Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky

16 yr old that wants to move out

My 16 yr old wants to leave our home here in KY and live with her adult brother in Florida. What legal rights does she have and do we have to let her go? Can we have her legally emancipated? This would be our first choice...

Kentucky does not have a formal emancipation statute. The courts do recognize contractual emancipation if the youth is able to be self-sufficient and the parents agree to them living on their own or with a relative. The problem is that if it turns out the youth was not so responsible after all, the parents could still be found to be negligent. So, you must be confident your child is mature enough to handle things.
