both parents want custody

i let my ex b/f have my son part of the week and i have him the weekend (joint you would say) will i lose him in custody battle if i try to get full custody its been like this for 2 1/2 yrs hes trying to shut me out of his life with school and some times he wont give him to me during week if i ask hes trying to take over his life

You did disadvantage yourself. There are two different custodies you are referring to: physical custody and legal custody. You disadvantaged yourself in physical custody because most judges like to maintain the status quo. However, that is not the only thing judges consider.

Determining either kind of custody is a question of "best interest" of the child. This is an elusive and ill-defined concept. You are really better off getting professional assistance from an attorney.
