Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

I am 25 years old. I have two sisters. One is 15, will be 16 next year, the other one is 11 going on 12 in october. They live at home with my mother. I live with my husband. My sisters are having a rough time living at home and I am scared my youngest sister is going to hurt her self. Can I take my mom to court to fight for full custody of my sisters? I can prove that it is not a good environment and that my mothers husband who is the father of my youngest sister only is very verbably abusive. Is there anything I can do?

It is difficult but not impossible to convince a court to divest a bio parent of custody. However, the court is obliged to do what is in the best interests of the children, and if you can present evidence that they are living in an unsafe environment with your mother, and that you and your husband are able to take care of them, you have a chance. The first thing you should do is retain an experienced family attorney for this project. The court would probably conduct a home study through its social services department and a recommendation would be made based upon the outcome.
