absent spouse divorce

I got married in july of 2004. My husband has been gone since 2005. I want a divorce but I dont know where he is to get him to sign the papers what should I do?

You do not have to stay married just because your husband is gone without a trace. Courts can and do grant divorces "by default" where the absent party fails to respond to a complaint for divorce. Certain procedures must be followed, though. If hiring an attorney is not possible, check with your local bar association and see if they operate a "pro se" project to assist individuals in representing themselves before the court.
