Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Past rent being pursued

I'm being sued by the landlord's attorney for 2685$ in 2 months back rent, and charges to clean up the apartment. But the rent i owed them was only 1508.00 and the clean up was 330.00. Plus i left them a 700$ deposit so i really have no idea where they came up with the 2600$. By the way this was in maryland and i moved to texas and they kept forwarding all the letters to my ex MD address

Re: Past rent being pursued

As for the back rent, there may be late charges included and they probably added legal fees. As for the suit, if you weren't served with the papers by a process server or someone with whom you live signed for them through certified mail, they can't pursue the case. You could ask for a breakdown of the amount they're trying to collect and maybe a compromise can be reached.
